Governor Hamilton's monument credits him as the 16th governor of the state of Illinois - apparently choosing not to count those who acquired the office through succession rather than election. Without that distinction, however, he is the eighteenth.
John M. Hamilton
Sixteenth
Governor of Illinois
1847-1905
"I lay in dust life's glory dead
and from the ground
there blossoms red
life that shall endless be"
The words on the back of the monument are from the hymn "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go" by George Matheson (1842-1906).
