![Democratic and Republican Cemeteries of Carlock: Marble shafts](dem-marbleshafts.jpg)
Abraham W. Carlock's prominence in local politics, and rivalry with Republican Philip Benson, led to a voluntary segregation in Carlock's two cemeteries. Few Republicans wished to buried next to a monument reading "Here Sleeps the Old Democrat". Some claim it was an insult to the memory of President Lincoln, in his home state;1 another theory holds that Carlock had announced that only Democrats were welcome at White Oak Cemetery.2
