This public receiving vault was used for temporary storage of
newly received remains while permanent burial places were
prepared. Among those served by this were President Lincoln
and his son Willie, who lay in this vault for a time.
The receiving vault is set into a hillside below the majestic Lincoln tomb. The urn at the top of the tomb, an early-20th Century replica of the original, was destroyed by vandals about 1 January 2007. 1 As of autumn 2008, it has not yet been replaced. |
