Captain Zeally Moss (1756- 1839), a veteran of the Revolutionary War, relocated from Virginia to Kentucky. Finding the practice of slavery there distasteful, he gave his plantation to his former slaves and came to Illinois.
His daughter, Lydia Moss, became the noted philanthropist Lydia Moss Bradley
