The Detweiller monument stands at the center of a large plot, encircled with headstones and recently-laid wreaths. The prominent anchor advertises the nautical career of Captain Henry Detweiller.
Henry Detweiller was born in France, moving to Peoria in 1837. He became a sailor on a steamboat, eventually rising to captaincy. During the Civil War, he commanded a steamboat bringing supplies to Federal troops.
Captain Henry Detweiller died in 1903. A city park in Peoria and several streets were named for him.
