At first, this appears to be an ordinary limestone tree monument, a common type found in hundreds of places. However, at its base is something unique - a railroad car entering a tunnel.

On a flap of peeling bark is printed:

George S. Bangs.
Died November 21
1877
aged 51 years, 8 months, 21 days
His crowning effort
The Fast Mail

Bangs had originated the idea of the railroad mail car, and is suitably commemorated with a carved railroad car, the side of which reads:

UNITED STATES
RAILWAY
POST OFFICE.
