Douglas Memorial Park

World War I "Victory" Monument

Two blocks away from Douglas Monument Park, in a median of Martin Luther King Drive south of 35th street, stands a World War I memorial. The monument is called "Victory" and honors Black soldiers of the Illinois National Guard who died in World War I. The original granite and bronze monument was dedicated in 1927. The figure on top was added in 1936 and dedicated to all the Black soldiers who died in the war. [Heise 1973]
