Orville Browning, a leading citizen of Quincy, took the office of Senator upon the death of the great Stephen A. Douglas.
Eliza Caldwell Browning, his wife, was well known as a close friend of President Abraham Lincoln.
Senator Browning's successor, Senator Richardson, is also buried at Woodland.
