Samuel "Nails" Morton was a 1920s Chicago gangster who is remembered today only for the way that he died. Morton was a member of the north side O'Banion gang - the enemies of the south side Torrio/Capone gang. Samuel Morton wasn't eliminated by the rival gang - he died accidentally. While riding a rented horse in Lincoln Park, Morton was thrown to the ground and killed. | |
That night, O'Banion lieutenant and successor Hymie Weiss and several of his men broke into the stable where the horse was kept. They brought the horse to the place where Morton had been thrown and shot it dead. It is said that Weiss then called the owner of the horse to tell him to come and get his saddle. |
