The monument is 96 feet tall. A 46-foot column rises from a granite base, atop which stands a 9'9" bronze figure of Douglas. At the corners of the base are four statues of women symbolizing History, Justice, Eloquence, and Illinois, and on each side is a bronze plaque depicting in relief scenes from the history of Illinois. On the east side is a doorway permitting entrance to the small chamber containing the Senator's marble sarcophagus, which features the words "Tell my children to obey the Laws and uphold the Constitution.".
