The east gate of the cemetery, facing Sheridan Road and Lake Michigan. Across the road is the shoreline, lined with limestone boulders.
A popular ghost story is associated with this entrance to Calvary. On several occasions, a man (thought to be a pilot) has been seen struggling in Lake Michgan, finally slipping beneath the surface and drowning. Then, it is said, he crawls out of the lake, crosses Sheridan Road, and vanishes into the cemetery.
